Depending on the construction the tile may be attached to bare cement a plywood or mason board underlayment or even affixed to a previously installed floor.
Re enamel floor tiles. Sheets of cement backing available from most do it yourself. But there is a solution to the problem. Ceramic tile can begin to look faded and worn after a few years. Ceramic tiles will not adhere to an enamel painted floor because the surface is too smooth.
You can resurface the tile yourself however with products available at your local home improvement center. Removing floor tile can be a difficult and time consuming project and the challenges often remain hidden until the project is underway. Refinishing is a much better option to replacing ceramic tile. Latex acrylic latex and enamel paints will all perform well on the ceramic tile if you have used a quality high adhesion primer to prepare the surface.
The term tile reglazing is a misnomer as it is impractical to remove ceramic tile that has been installed and ship it back to the factory for re firing in a kiln. Apply two to three even coats as needed until you achieve full coverage. But the process is the same.
