Setting tile in shower. Grout joints between 1 8 and 1 16 are good because they keep the maintenance low for tile showers. You have about five to 10 minutes to set the tile so don t apply too much adhesive over a large area. On the ceiling and floor of the shower we used 2 x 2 tiles and on shower walls 2 x 4 tiles. Measure and mark the spot for your second row of tile check your mark for level then attach a board to the wall to act as a guide.
Measure up from top of the last row. Cut as needed with tile snips or a wet saw to allow tile pieces a better fit around shower faucets and shower heads. This collection of tips may not eliminate all your tile troubles but it will help you avoid the most common headaches. When the tile has set mix the grout for the shower walls.
That way if you do have to cut tile to fit they ll be at the bottom where the tub or shower pan might be slightly out of level. We recommend you get their handbook and read it. Periodically check the tile line with a level to be sure they are straight. Save time by setting several tiles at once. To set the tile apply an even coat of mastic on only a small portion of the wall at a time. Repeat the procedure setting each row of tile on top of the last row of tile.
Spread thin set onto your tiles with v notched trowel and place the tile just below the marked line. Before you start setting tile take some measurements and see how the tiles will all lay out image 1. Use small grout joints. Start a new row above the first row and continue setting tile as instructed.
For exposed edges set edge trim or bullnose tile pieces in place. Installing tile in a kitchen or bathroom is hard work. Use spacers all. Continue until you reach the top of the shower stall.
Sanded grout is difficult to get into small joints so adding non sanded grout helps thin it out so it can be applied more easily and aids application on walls.
