Metamorphic rocks arise from the transformation of existing rock types in a process called metamorphism which means change in form. Metamorphic rocks started out as some other type of rock but have been substantially changed from their original igneous sedimentary or earlier metamorphic form. The original rock is subjected to heat temperatures greater than 150 to 200 c and pressure 100 megapascals 1 000 bar or more causing profound physical or chemical change the protolith may be a sedimentary igneous or existing metamorphic rock.
Other bands contain platy or elongate minerals with evidence of preferred orientation. When granite is metamorphosed it becomes a rock called gneiss. It is this banded appearance and texture rather than composition that define a gneiss. Metamorphism is the addition of heat and or pressure to existing rocks which causes them to change physically and or chemically so that they become a new rock. The rock cycle simply moves from the igneous to metamorphic to sedimentary rocks and the process repeats itself over and over.
